Volkswagen has announced that its new electric ID.5 SUV is now available to order.
The new model is the third in Volkswagen’s ‘ID’ range of electric cars, and is essentially a coupe-styled version of the boxier ID.4. It becomes the brand’s range-topping EV, with the German firm reflecting this in the fact it’s only offered with a larger battery pack, enabling a longer electric range.
So while ID.4’s are available with smaller and more affordable batteries, all ID.5s come with a large 77kWh unit, which means it can travel for up to 313 miles on a single charge. It also can be charged at up to 135kW, meaning an 80 per cent charge can take as little as half an hour. Customers can choose to have the ID.5 in various power outputs – 172bhp, 201bhp or the flagship 295bhp GTX. The latter model also comes with all-wheel-drive, and allows this SUV to reach 0-60mph in 6.1 seconds.
Prices for the ID.5 start from £50,550, with generous standard equipment on the Tech model including Matrix LED headlights, an electric boot, electric and massaging front seats and a large head-up display. Next up is the ‘Max’ trim level, which features larger 20-inch alloy wheels, along with configurable driver settings, known as Dynamic Chassis Control. These start from £54,050.
The flagship GTX costs from £58,640, and you’re mainly paying for the extra performance, though it gets tweaks such as revised 20-inch alloy wheels, sports styling kit and GTX branding.
At the same time, Volkswagen has also announced a new addition to the existing ID.4 range – a 172bhp power option for versions fitted with the large 77kWh battery. Offering an electric range of up to 318 miles, prices for this model start from £41,430.
Both models are now available to order, with first customer deliveries expected in the next few months.
