Nissan reveals new Townstar van as part of refreshed LCV range

New entry-level will also be offered as an EV

Nissan has revealed its new Townstar van as the brand’s latest entry-level commercial vehicle.

Unveiled as part of the Japanese firm rebranded van line-up – which sees models like the NV250, NV300 and NV400 replaced or renamed to the Townstar, Primastar and Interstar – the Townstar builds on the success of the e-NV200, as it will be available with an electric option.

Based on the same CMF-C platform as the Renault Kangoo, the Townstar will be available with a turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine delivering 128bhp. Alongside it will be an electric model that uses a 44kWh battery. Though Nissan said the electric range is still being finalised, it’s predicted 177-mile range is a 43 per cent improvement on that offered by the outgoing e-NV200.

The Townstar makes big leaps where safety technology is concerned, and is available with the firm’s ProPilot driver assistance pack, which includes adaptive cruise control and a feature that helps to keep the van in the centre of a lane, even around corners. A new ‘Around View Monitor’ also brings a 360-degree camera, which is a first for the compact van segment.

Inside, drivers get an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a large 10-inch digital dial display for a modern feel. Nissan promises that the Townstar will also offer ‘passenger-car-like comfort’, too.

The design is similar to that of Renault’s Kangoo van, too. It does, however, receive new LED headlights as standard and a new V-motion grille design, which varies in appearance for electric and petrol models.

In terms of versatility, Nissan promises up to 4.3m3 of cargo space, which allows two Euro pallets to be fitted. It also has a payload of up to 800kg, along with a towing capacity of up to 1,500kg. A five-year, 100,000-mile warranty will also be included as standard, with the electric version’s battery covered for up to eight years.

Further details and pricing for the Nissan Townstar are expected to be announced in the near future.
