The Los Angeles Motor Show 2024 is in full swing, marking the year’s final major automotive event. Held at the iconic LA Convention Centre, this annual exhibition brings together some of the industry’s biggest names, showcasing everything from cutting-edge technology to bold design statements. The event offers a glimpse into the future of motoring, with a focus on electrification, sustainable powertrains, and ever-popular SUVs dominating the scene.
Here’s a closer look at the standout vehicles making waves at the show.
Kia Sportage: A Familiar Name with a Fresh Look
Kia’s fifth-generation Sportage has received a design overhaul aimed at aligning the model with the company’s growing EV range. While the mechanical underpinnings remain largely unchanged, the aesthetic updates are significant. The Sportage now features revamped front and rear styling, sharper LED lighting elements, and an assortment of new wheel designs that modernise its look.
In addition to visual upgrades, the Sportage introduces several new colour and trim options to enhance its appeal. Although this updated version is tailored to the US market, elements of its design may filter through to global models in the future.
Hyundai Ioniq 9: A New Electric Flagship
Hyundai’s Ioniq range continues to grow with the addition of the Ioniq 9, a bold seven-seater SUV designed to combine luxury and practicality with advanced electric performance. Built on the same platform as the Kia EV9, the Ioniq 9 offers a choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations. Its performance options range from a modest 215bhp to a robust 429bhp, allowing drivers to achieve 0-62mph in just 5.3 seconds in higher-spec variants.
One of the Ioniq 9’s standout features is its impressive range. Thanks to a 110.3kWh battery, it promises up to 372 miles on a single charge, surpassing many rivals. Hyundai is yet to confirm the maximum charging speeds, but if it aligns with the rest of the Ioniq lineup, drivers can expect charging rates of 230-240kW, enabling rapid top-ups.
The Ioniq 9’s sleek design blends futuristic elements with practicality, making it an attractive option for families seeking an eco-friendly yet stylish vehicle.
Hyundai Initium: Hydrogen-Powered Concept
Hyundai also used the show to introduce the Initium concept, which represents its vision for a hydrogen-powered future. The name "Initium," Latin for "beginning," reflects Hyundai’s ambitions to lead the charge in creating a hydrogen society.
The Initium features a hydrogen fuel cell stack paired with a battery, delivering a combined range of 403 miles. Its powertrain produces 201bhp, offering respectable performance alongside zero emissions. The vehicle’s design language, dubbed "Art of Steel," emphasises clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic, signalling a potential direction for Hyundai’s upcoming models.
This concept underscores Hyundai’s commitment to diversifying its approach to sustainable mobility, complementing its well-established electric offerings.
Volkswagen Tayron: Expanding the SUV Portfolio
The Volkswagen Tayron, originally a China-exclusive model, made its global debut at the show. Designed as a larger sibling to the Tiguan, the Tayron is a seven-seater SUV aimed at families who prioritise space and flexibility.
With its bold full-width light bar, aggressive air intakes, and a wider stance than the Tiguan, the Tayron cuts a commanding figure. Inside, the SUV offers up to 885 litres of boot space, ensuring ample room for luggage or gear. Buyers can choose from petrol, diesel, or plug-in hybrid powertrains, making the Tayron a versatile addition to Volkswagen’s SUV lineup.
The interior mirrors the Tiguan’s user-friendly design, with the option of a 15-inch infotainment display for tech-savvy drivers. The Tayron’s adaptability and practicality position it as a strong contender against models like the Hyundai Santa Fe.
Genesis GV70: Luxury and Performance Refined
Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury division, unveiled an updated version of its GV70, catering to both petrol and electric preferences. The facelift includes revised front and rear styling, giving the GV70 a sharper and more modern appearance.
For the electrified GV70, Genesis has increased the battery capacity from 77.2kWh to 84kWh, extending the vehicle’s range by approximately 20 miles. The SUV also gains Genesis’ Highway Body Motion Control system, designed to enhance ride comfort and handling precision.
Inside, the GV70 boasts a 27-inch OLED infotainment screen and an optional 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, ensuring a premium experience for passengers. The addition of Terrain Mode improves off-road capability, while the model’s luxurious touches reinforce its appeal in the high-end SUV market.
The Los Angeles Motor Show 2024 provides a clear look at current industry trends, with an emphasis on SUVs, electrification, and alternative powertrains. While manufacturers continue to explore new technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells, traditional SUVs like the Volkswagen Tayron and the refreshed Kia Sportage remain central to the market. Models like the Genesis GV70 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 highlight how brands are combining luxury and innovation to appeal to diverse consumer needs.
