BMW has just announced a variety of wide-sweeping updates for the 3 Series, ensuring that this much-loved model can keep its head up in the face of some serious competition. It’s been applied to the more practical Touring - BMW-speak for estate - too, with new exterior designs meeting a more high-tech interior than before.
In fact, there’s quite a lot going on with this refreshed 3 Series, so let’s dive in and see what it has to offer.
It’s got a sharper look than before
It doesn’t feel all that long since this new generation 3 Series was released, which is probably why BMW hasn’t meddled with its looks too much. However, there have been a few choice updates, mainly at the front end where you’ll find a redesigned kidney grille and sharper headlights, which come with LED technology as standard.
Around the back, there’s a new rear apron with fresh exhaust designs. As we said, it’s not a brand-new look, but it’s definitely enough to add some extra interest to the look of the 3 Series.
The interior has been brought right up to date
BMW has thrown some of its very latest technology at the new 3 Series, namely its new Curved Display, which first saw use on its iX electric flagship. All cars get it as standard, with the 12.3-inch driver display combined with a 14.9-inch infotainment screen to provide one huge, wraparound system. It’s running BMW’s new Operating System 8, too.
Plus, because of this new feature, the interior of the 3 Series features fewer buttons than before, giving it a clean, unfussy look.
There’s still a good variety of engines to choose from
Engine choice has always been a key trait for the 3 Series and it’s no different for this new version. So, as before, you’ve got the option of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains to ensure that there’s a setup to suit all buyers.
Things kick off with the 182bhp, 2.0-litre-powered 320i, but you can go right the way up to the performance-orientated M340i with 369bhp and the option of four-wheel-drive.
M Sport has been upgraded too
This is one of the most popular specifications for the 3 Series is M Sport, which is why BMW has upgraded this dynamically-orientated trim level too. So you get a new honeycomb design grille included as standard, as well as 18-inch alloy wheels.
M Sport cars also come with eye-catching trapezoidal exhaust pipes, which definitely helps them to stand out from the crowd.
There’s more standard equipment than before
BMW always likes to bump up the levels of standard equipment offered on its refreshed vehicles and that’s certainly the case with this upgraded 3 Series. Prices start from £36,670 and all cars get an eight-speed gearbox as standard, as well as three-zone climate control and an automatically dimming rear-view mirror.
Plus, an extended storage pack comes equipped from the off, as do front and rear parking sensors.
