Ford is a manufacturer that knows more about performance cars than most, and it’s produced some sublime drivers cars over the years.
As times change, and buyers consider different types of vehicles, it’s led Ford’s Performance division to create different types of vehicles – one such being the Puma ST. It’s the brand’s first sporty SUV in Europe, and promises to offer plenty of appeal to those seeking an alternative to the more typical hot hatchback.

It’s based on the Fiesta ST
If ever there was a car that you’d want to use as your starting point, the Ford Fiesta ST is that car. It’s been one of the best hot hatches of modern years, and serves as the underpinnings for this sporty Puma.
Even the regular version of this model is great fun to drive, but Ford really took it up a notch with the ST treatment. It’s particularly worth going for the optional Performance Pack, as this brings racier Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, along with launch control and a limited-slip differential – the latter really helping the Puma with extra traction as you come out of a corner.
Strong performance
Next to some other performance crossovers, the Puma ST’s turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine might not sound all that impressive, but it’s more than plentiful for this car.
Putting out 197bhp and 320Nm of torque, it lets this Ford sprint to 60mph in just 6.5 seconds – only slightly down on the Fiesta – and it would reach 137mph should you be legally able to max it out.
Cool looks
Ever since Ford debuted the Puma in 2019, it’s proven to be a refreshingly different choice to in terms of design, and is more than able to stand out from the crowd with its neat dimensions and coupe-like profile.
The ST takes things a further notch, with its more aggressive bodykit – including a large front splitter, rear diffuser and extended roof spoiler – really showing its performance intent. It also comes with large 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, while the optional Mean Green body colour makes it look especially menacing.
It’s a practical choice
The Fiesta ST is a superb hot hatch, but there’s no getting away from the fact that it is quite compact, and would likely prove a bit too small if you had a family, for example.
That’s where the Puma steps in, with its roomier interior making it more suitable if people regularly sit in the rear seats. Its boot also has a trick up its sleeve thanks to something called a ‘MegaBox’, which is a deep plastic-lined area beneath the main boot floor that’s ideal for keeping mucky boots or clothes in without dirtying up the rest of the car.
Generous standard kit
The ST sits right at the top of the Puma range and comes with an impressive amount of equipment to help justify its price.
Highlights include full LED headlights, keyless start, a reversing camera and a brilliant 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. You also get heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a smartphone charging pad.
With prices for the Puma ST starting from £29,895, it’s also the most affordable performance crossover on the market today.
