Ford is no stranger to sporty special editions. From models like the Sierra RS500 Cosworth in the ‘80s to the latest Ford Fiesta ST Performance Edition, these are some of the brand’s most desirable models ever.
And now Ford is back with a new special version, this time based on the Ford Focus ST – the Edition. It’s the first time this Volkswagen Golf GTI rival has been available with a more exclusive version on this latest generation, and promises greater style and driving thrills.
Here’s what you need to know about it…
Dynamic changes
Though Ford hasn’t messed with the Focus ST’s 276bhp 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, this Edition does introduce a number of dynamic changes to enhance the way it drives.
The key difference here, though, is the addition of a new two-way adjustable coilover suspension system. Made by specialists KW Automotive, the setup includes twin-tube stainless steel damper housings and springs painted in Ford’s bright Performance Blue paint colour.
It means the ride is lowered by 10mm compared to the regular car, though a further 20mm of adjustment is available when customers want to manually adjust the settings. Ford says the setup has increased the spring rates by more than 50 per cent compared to a standard Focus ST, with quicker damping also said to give drivers an even greater level of control over cornering responses.
Owners of the car will also receive a technical document explaining the recommended suspension settings for different weather conditions, while the model is also equipped with a special Nurburgring driving mode to maximise driving enjoyment.
Styling changes
Undoubtedly the most obvious thing you’ll notice about the Focus ST Edition is its paint colour – Azura Blue. It’s the first time it’s been offered on the Focus, and matches the paint on the smaller Fiesta ST Edition.
On top of that, it also comes with contrasting gloss black elements, including for the grille, front bumper wings and door mirrors. The roof is also painted black, alongside the roof spoiler and rear diffuser panel to complement the look further.
Elsewhere, the ST Edition benefits from new lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels, which come as standard with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. Thanks to the innovative production methods adopted with the wheels, it allows less material to be used, helping to bring weight savings over the standard alloy wheels. But they’re not just about styling, as Ford says their shape improves tyre contact with the road, which helps to offer enhanced grip and responses.
Interior tweaks
Compared to the rest of the car, interior tweaks on the Focus ST are relatively subdued. However, the standard-fit Recaro sports seats now come with blue detailing, while the starter button comes in bright red to make the cabin more eye-catching.
