Ford expands Mustang range with new California

Classic-inspired model will only be available as a convertible

Ford has added a new retro-inspired California model to its Mustang line-up.

Available only as a convertible, the California will sit alongside existing Mustang Mach-E, Mach-E GT, Mustang GT and Mustang Mach 1 models.

Designed to invoke the ‘quintessential spirit of west coast America’, the California has a front grille finished in black with contrast GT/CS badging in red. There are also lower side stripes finished in black, red and grey which incorporate a hidden ‘California Special’ script that is ‘almost invisible’ in low light conditions but becomes more prominent in direct sunlight.

A range of aerodynamic tweaks has also been included, such as the large front splitter and optional rear side air scoops. At the rear, there’s a California Special faux filler cap and quad exhaust pipes, while 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are also included. Under the bonnet there’s a strut tower brace with the California Special badge.

Nine exterior colours are there to choose from - including Grabber Blue and Cyber Orange - while all cars benefit from standard-fit heated and cooled front seats, as well as Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system.

Underneath the bonnet sits Ford’s 5.0-litre V8 engine with 444bhp and 529Nm of torque, driven through a six-speed manual gearbox - though a 10-speed automatic is also available. Ford claims a 0-60mph time of 4.6 seconds with the former and 4.3 seconds with the latter.

Prices for the Mustang California will start from £52,105.
