DS E-Tense Performance hints at future electric sports models

Sleek electric sports car produces more than 800bhp

DS has unveiled a sporty new concept car that hints at future performance models from the French premium marque.

The firm has already heavily committed to electrification, with every new DS launched from 2024 set to be all-electric. Currently, the brand offers its DS 3 Crossback as an EV, while the rest of its range – the DS 4, DS 7 and DS 9 – are all offered with a plug-in hybrid option.

Now DS is hinting at future electric sporty models, using the experience from its Formula E team, with the unveiling of the ‘DS E-Tense Performance prototype’. Using a carbon monocoque, its powerful twin motors produce a huge 804bhp, while using intelligent all-wheel-drive too.

DS says that its ‘chassis, power unit and battery introduce innovative solutions fuelling the development of future generations of 100 per cent electric DS production models’.

The concept car takes the carbon monocoque idea and powertrain from the Formula E racing models, while stopping power is said to be solely powered by regenerative braking – the discs and pads are said to be there only for ‘safety’. The model’s battery is also positioned centrally in the rear, which is said to provide optimum weight distribution.

Alongside battery technology, the E-Tense Performance is also said to experiment with car design, with the model lacking a conventional grille’, while also featuring wild LED lighting at both the front and rear. Cameras are also said to replace conventional headlights.

Inside, DS says the model’s cabin has been ‘conceived to gather data’, and uses bucket seats and a steering wheel from Formula E cars. The model is far from a static display, too, with the brand’s racing drivers soon to be getting behind the wheel to carry on with its development and test it on both roads and track.
