BMW reveals colour-changing car at CES 2022

The BMW iX ‘Flow’ features E Ink that lets the SUV change colour

Looking for a new car, but can’t find it in the colour you want? Well, that could be something of the past thanks to BMW’s new colour-changing technology.

Revealed yesterday at CES 2022 – a show centred around technology in Las Vegas – the concept, known as the ‘iX Flow’ is a car that can change its colour ‘to different situations and individual wishes’.

The change in colour is achieved by a special wrap, which when ‘stimulated by electrical signals’, brings different colour pigments to the surface, making the body of the car change colour.

The technology, which is referred to as ‘E Ink’, has never been applied to a car before and is also said to be able to improve efficiency by the colours being able to reflect sunlight and absorb thermal energy.

BMW says the colour offers ‘unprecedented potential for personalisation’, with the hope that it could appear on both the exterior and interior of future production models from the firm.

Stella Clarke, head of the project, said: “Similar to fashion or the status ads on social media channels, the vehicle then becomes an expression of different moods and circumstances in daily life."

Also on display from BMW at CES was the brand’s powerful new ‘M60’ version of the iX, as well as additional ‘theatre’ and ‘digital art’ modes for its cars.
