Hot hatch gets tweaked dynamics to improve the way it drives

BMW has announced revisions to its M135i hot hatchback, which sees a series of engine and chassis tweaks to improve the way it drives.

The M135i is the fastest version of the 1 Series, sitting above the 128ti in the range and serving as a rival to the Mercedes-AMG A35 and Volkswagen Golf R.

Though it’s only been on sale for a couple of years, BMW has made a number of in-depth tweaks, with changes including increasing camber values of the front wheels to allow greater ability though corners. The suspension has also been modified, with tweaked spring and damping systems. BMW says that the result is a ‘significant improvement in roll behaviour in corners’ and enhanced steering feel.

Though the M135i’s turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine remains the same as before – putting out 302bhp and enabling a 0-60mph time of just 4.6 seconds – BMW says that the chassis tweaks will enable greater potential. Like before, the M135i features all-wheel-drive and uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

BMW has also tweaked the sound of the M135i for a more ‘authentic’ soundtrack, while also being transmitted into the interior through the car’s sound system.

Elsewhere, a trio of new paint finishes are available for the M135i – Sao Paulo Yellow (the same as you find on the new M4) and matte Frozen Orange and Pure Grey. If customers want an even more bespoke paint finish, they can go down the BMW Individual route, offering hundreds of options.

No updated prices for the M135i have been announced, though expect a very slight increase on the current hot haych’s £37,700 starting price.
