5 reasons why the Skoda Octavia should be your next family car

Here’s why Skoda’s best-seller is such a useful choice

Skoda is well known for its cars’ practicality. From its small Fabia supermini through to its seven-seat Kodiaq SUV, its models always manage to be impressively versatile.

But Skoda’s most popular car – the Octavia – really takes things up another level, with a range of features and attributes that make it an ideal option for families. Let’s explore why the Skoda Octavia is such a great option.

Hugely practical and hatchback models available

Though it’s not uncommon for a model in the mid-size class to be available as both a conventional hatchback and as an estate, it’s rare that two models are quite so roomy.

That’s because the Octavia isn’t a traditional hatchback (in terms of bodystyle), as it almost adopts a saloon-like shape that really aids when it comes to practicality. In fact, there’s very little between the two cars when it comes to dimensions, and they’re quite hard to choose between.

Boot is the largest in its segment

One clear advantage of this extended shape is that the Octavia has a boot that’s significantly bigger than virtually all its rivals – in fact the only car that can get quite close to it is the Honda Civic.

Measuring 600 litres in hatchback form, it offers more than 200 litres extra boot space compared to rivals like the Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf, making it ideal for carrying pushchairs and all the odds and ends that come with family life around with you. Of course, the Estate is also available, which adopts a roomier bodystyle and takes boot space up to 640 litres.

Packed with Skoda’s ‘Simply Clever’ touches

One of Skoda’s taglines in recent years is ‘Simply Clever’, which is all about the idea of kitting out its card with a range of simple but effective touches to improve everyday usability. And the Octavia is absolutely kitted out with these features.

From umbrellas in the doors to help in a downpour, a special partitioning system in the boot, to headrests in the back that improve comfort when sleeping, the Octavia really is a model that is impressively well geared towards family life.

Broad range of powertrain options

There’s no one solution to fit everyone in the family car segment, and it’s why the Octavia is available with a huge range of powertrain options to suit most buyers.

From affordable petrol options to efficient diesels that will be ideal for drivers that do a lot of miles, Skoda now even offers plug-in hybrid versions that will extend the appeal of the model to company car buyers further, while also really helping to reduce running costs thanks to its 35-mile electric range.

Skoda also continues to offer its vRS versions, which cater for those looking for something sportier and more fun to drive, yet without sacrificing on practicality.

Great value for money

As a brand, Skoda has always excelled on delivering superb value for money, and though the latest Octavia might be bigger and more advanced than ever, it continues to deliver affordability.

With a starting price of £21,700, it comfortably undercuts rivals like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf by several thousand pounds. You also still get plenty for your money, with even entry-level SE versions coming with LED headlights, a large 10-inch touchscreen and dual-zone climate control to name just a few features.
