2022 Citroen C5 Aircross: What’s changed?

Citroen’s updated its largest SUV. We explore the changes

The family SUV segment is one of the most competitive around, but it’s one that Citroen has been able to succeed in with its refreshingly different C5 Aircross.

Launched in 2018, it’s clocked up more than 260,000 sales since, with its funky design and focus on comfort really appealing to many buyers. And though it was by no means old, Citroen’s now decided to give it a mid-life refresh for 2022. Here we explore what’s changed…

Smarter design

The C5 Aircross was already a stylish choice, but plenty of the changes on this new car stem around the way it looks. It’s the front end that receives the bulk of the changes, with this SUV getting a smart new grille and daytime running lights – all of which connect to Citroen’s chevron logo.

It also benefits from design elements seen on the firm’s new C4 and C5X, such as larger air intakes, while the lower areas of the car come in a smart glossy aluminium trim, while there’s the choice of diamond-cut 18-inch alloy wheels to set it apart from it from its predecessor.

Great personalisation

Citroen is renowned for its impressive levels of personalisation, and there was already plenty of scope to make the C5 Aircross stand out. This new version introduces even more possibilities, though, with a new Eclipse Blue paint colour also adding extra appeal to this SUV.

On top of this are ‘colour packs’, which see a contrasting shade applied to the front air intakes and plastic mouldings on the doors, known as ‘Airbumps’. Four new colours are available on this – gloss black, dark chrome, anodised bronze and anodised blue, all of which enable you to make your C5 Aircross stand out further.

Increased focus on comfort

As we’ve already mentioned, Citroen is a brand synonymous with comfort, and the outgoing car already impressed in this area, helped by its clever ‘progressive hydraulic cushions’ suspension setup that is able to soak up bumps on the road.

It’s also fitted with Citroen’s renowned ‘Advanced Comfort’ seats, though these have now been improved further.  Now featuring a thicker foam and revised structure, they aim to make travel even more comfortable. At the same time, four new ‘ambiances’ are also offered, which bring bespoke stitching on the seats, door panels and dashboard all in revised colours. The ‘Hype Black’ is a particular highlight, as it blends perforated black leather with blue Nappa leather for a particularly smart finish.

New touchscreen

Also new to the latest C5 Aircross is a larger 10-inch touchscreen, which helps the cabin to look more modern than the outgoing eight-inch screen.

Citroen promises the new system offers improved ergonomics and easier access to climate control functions. It’s also positioned higher-up the dashboard than before and features satellite navigation and smartphone mirroring too. All C5 Aircross models in the UK will come with this as standard.

More modern interior design

On top of the touchscreen, Citroen has worked to modernise the C5 Aircross’s interior in other areas – not least the centre console.

Now featuring new black leather and chrome touchscreen, the layout looks far more upmarket than before, while versions fitted with an automatic gearbox come with a reduced ‘e-Toggle’ gear selector, which helps to de-clutter the interior.

The 2022 Citroen C5 Aircross is scheduled for launch this summer.
