Volkswagen now has one of the most extensive line-ups of SUVs of any manufacturer, ranging from more compact city-aimed crossovers through to seven-seaters, and everything between.
One of the latest versions to join the VW range is the Taigo. Slotting between the T-Cross and T-Roc in the line-up, it brings smart coupe-like styling, good value and plenty of interior space. Here’s what you need to know about it…
What engines are available?
Volkswagen offers three engine options on the Taigo. Two of these revolve around the 1.0-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine, which is available with outputs of 94bhp or 108bhp.
Choose the former and it comes paired to a five-speed manual gearbox, though we’d recommend the 108bhp version as this gets a sixth gear, or a choice of a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission. With the 94bhp model, it takes 10.9 seconds to hit 60mph, with this dropping to 10.2 seconds for the 108bhp car. Both are good on fuel, returning around 50mpg, with CO2 emissions of 123g/km.
If you want some extra performance, Volkswagen also offers a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine, paired to a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. It’s noticeably quicker – hitting 60mph in 8.1 seconds – though still reasonable on fuel, with VW claiming 46.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 138g/km.
What trim levels are offered?
Volkswagen offers three trim levels on the Taigo – Life, Style and R-Line. Equipment highlights and prices are as follows.
Life – from £23,155
Standard equipment is generous across the line-up, with the Life coming with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, automatic wipers, an eight-inch digital cockpit display and eight-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring. You also get wireless smartphone charging, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist and park assist.
Style – from £26,665
Upgrade to the Style and it brings smarter 17-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded media system with satellite navigation and a larger 10.25-inch digital dial screen. You also get Matrix LED headlights, two-zone climate control and silver roof rails.
R-Line – from £27,565
Building on the spec of the Life, the R-Line brings sportier 17-inch alloy wheels and a more aggressive bodykit. You also get tinted rear windows, sports seats, black roof rails and front door sill protectors. Climate control and an upgraded navigation system are also fitted.
What about personalisation?
The Taigo is probably Volkswagen’s most personalisable SUV, with a whole range of colours available – including funky shades like Visual Green, and Kings Red. You can also option a two-tone colour look, bringing a black roof and mirrors.
You can add a bright Visual Green colour interior too, bringing a striking design. Various alloy wheels are available as an extra too, up to 18 inches in size.
More conventional extras available include heated seats (£310), a panoramic opening sunroof (£870) and keyless entry (£350). A reversing camera is worth choosing at £265 too.
