The Mercedes-Benz compact range is brimming to the rim with options, from the entry level A-Class hatch up to the GLA SUV. But the German firm wanted to fill another niche and it did that with the CLA – a compact coupe that offers sleek styling and much of the same attributes as the A-Class.
After the reveal of the second-generation last year, we take a look at the latest version of the CLA range…
What power units are there?
Mercedes offers the model with an all-petrol engine line-up – ranging from the entry level 180 up to the 250. The 180 and 200 options are both based on a 1.4-litre, four-cylinder unit, with the engine developing 134bhp and 161bhp respectively for each version.
The two remaining power options – the 220 and 250 – are both derived from a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder block, with each producing 187bhp and 221bhp. The 220 is the only engine in the range offered alongside 4Matic all-wheel-drive – whilst all the engines come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard.
Emissions-wise, the entry-level 180 is the most accomplished, as it can achieve a claimed 123g/km CO2 – although the 200 is only slightly more polluting at 124g/km CO2.
How can I spec my CLA?
Mercedes provides customers with three trim options for the CLA – all derived from the AMG Line entry option. The standard car comes with a surprising amount of kit, such as dynamic select driving modes, leather upholstery, a seven-inch instrument display alongside a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, the MBUX voice-activated assistant, sports seats, automatic two-zone climate control, AMG body styling, parking sensors, reversing camera, LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels and wireless charging.
The Premium upgrade for AMG-Line adds keyless entry, a larger 10.25-inch instrument display, augmented reality for the satellite navigation, dash cam and a Mercedes sound system – while Premium Plus comes with multibeam LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, traffic sign assist and electrically adjustable seats with memory function.
Further options are available in the form of the driving assistance package, which adds an extensive amount of safety equipment for £1,495, as well as interior and exterior trim options.
How much does the CLA cost?
Prices for the CLA start from £30,550 for the CLA 180 AMG-Line model, while the AMG Line Premium options start from £32,045. The top-spec AMG-Line Premium Plus model starts from £33,540.
