Jeep continues to be a carmaker that really strikes a chord with buyers. Thanks to its longstanding history of creating chunky, off-road-ready SUVs, the American firm is often seen as the go-to option for those buyers who are after a robust and hard-wearing car.
But more recently, Jeep has pivoted to create cars that put slightly less focus on their ability to travel through tough conditions and more on everyday usability. This brings us to the Renegade, which was released to take advantage of the surging interest in crossovers.
Refreshed back in 2018, the Renegade has since been bolstered by the addition of plug-in and mild-hybrid powertrains, helping to improve its efficiency levels while broadening its appeal to a wider group of buyers. These days, the Renegade is one of Jeep’s most popular models, but if you’re considering it, what else do you need to know? Let’s take a look.
What powertrains are available?
The Renegade is accompanied by a good range of engines, with both 1.0- and 1.3-litre petrol variants available at the more entry-level area of the line-up. The former drives through a manual transmission to the front wheels and offers up to 42.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 151g/km. The more powerful 1.5-litre version, meanwhile, is still respectable with combined fuel efficiency of 41.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 155g/km. Both cars power the front wheels only, with the more powerful variant utilising an automatic gearbox instead.
Then there’s the mild-hybrid version, which combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a small electric motor and battery. Jeep says that you could see around 45mpg combined with CO2 emissions of 135g/km. Again, all of these models - badged e-Hybrid - are front-wheel-drive-only, but do offer a slight efficiency improvement over the regular petrol models.
Finally, there’s the plug-in hybrid version. With a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to a 59bhp electric motor and an 11.4kWh battery, this model - badged 4xe - is a really efficient choice, with Jeep claiming it’ll return up to 134mpg. Emissions are very low too at 50g/km. Plus, there’s the ability to travel for up to 30 miles on electric-only power, making it a great choice for around-town drivers.
What trim levels are offered?
Longitude - from £24,100
Things kick off with the Longitude specification which brings a healthy amount of standard equipment. Highlights include an 8.4-inch infotainment screen incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while 17-inch alloy wheels are fitted to the outside.
Inside, there’s dual-zone air conditioning, while plenty of safety assistance equipment can help to keep everyone safe in the event of an accident.
Night Eagle - from £25,100
Move up to Night Eagle and you’ll find a range of dark-coloured elements added to give the Renegade a more stealthy appearance. Highlights include 18-inch black alloy wheels and a variety of gloss black exterior and interior details.
Night Eagle cars also benefit from tinted privacy glass.
Limited - from £26,800
Opt for a Limited-specification Renegade and 18-inch alloy wheels are now included, alongside front parking sensors and a full forward-collision warning system.
One of the best additions for this trim is the full leather interior that adds a particularly upmarket feel to the Renegade’s cabin.
80th Anniversary - from £28,700
Newly added 80th Anniversary cars get pretty much all of the bells and whistles you could want but add in a range of bespoke badging which is only available on this particular model.
What about personalisation?
Jeep has always offered plenty of ways to make one of their cars ‘yours’ and this is definitely the case with the Renegade. As well as the wide variety of specifications to choose from, there are several exterior colours to opt for as well as a series of alloy wheel designs.
Jeep also offers extra ‘packs’ which can be added to the Renegade. For example, the ‘Function Pack’ adds auto-folding door mirrors, windows that can be controlled through the key fob and a rear seat with a 40/20/40 split for better loading options.
