The Ford Transit has been helping to strengthen British businesses for many decades and the model continues to have vast appeal.
A new model has recently gone on sale, and it’s elevated the winning formula further – adding additional practicality, lower running costs and new driver assistance tech, all of which aims to reduce costs for businesses.
We should note that with this guide we’re focusing on the main Transit model – excluding the smaller Courier and Custom models. Here’s a quick guide to the new Transit van.
What engines are available?
With diesel engines still popular in the van sector, it’s not surprising that the large Transit line-up is still all diesel engines.
All engines use different variations of Ford’s new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, with power outputs of 104bhp, 128bhp, 168bhp and 182bhp available. What’s more you can choose to have the majority of variants with either front- or rear-wheel-drive, too. The standard gearbox is a six-speed manual transmission, though all but the 104bhp engine are also offered with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
Introduced on the 128bhp 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine is also mild-hybrid technology, which cuts CO2 emissions and reduces fuel consumption – making them an ideal option for long-distance van drivers.
What trim levels are offered?
While a host of engines and body sizes are available, the actual trim level choice on the Transit is simplified to three versions. Equipment highlights and prices are listed below.
Leader – from £26,235
Standard equipment on the Leader includes Bluetooth, electric windows, remote locking, a trip computer and safety kit in the form of emergency brake warning and side wind mitigation.
Trend – from £28,445
This adds additional creature comforts – including a heated windscreen, electric folding mirrors, automatic lights and wipers. It also features cruise control, an eight-inch touchscreen, a leather steering wheel and front and rear parking sensors – the latter feature being particularly useful.
Limited – from £32,490
If you want a few more luxuries opt for the Trend, which adds body-coloured bumpers, 16-inch alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights and air-conditioning.

What about personalisation?
Personalisation isn’t quite so relevant in the van world as it is in the car world, but the first thing to note with the Transit is the variety of derivatives on offer. There are hundreds of different configurations – including three wheelbase lengths and three van heights, all depending on your needs.
That said, there are still plenty of different options such as a reversing camera, lane-keep assist and a driver attention alert – bundled together for £720. Adaptive cruise control could be useful for those spending a lot of time on motorways, too, adding £810 to the price. A host of seating configurations are also offered, as well as Ford Pass Connect – a useful connected tracking service available.
A host of colours are offered, too. Unsurprisingly white is the standard colour, but if you want something a bit more vibrant opt for Saffron Yellow (£960) or Kapoor Red (£780).
