Buyer’s guide to the 2022 Kia Sportage

The new Kia Sportage brings a bold new look and more tech - but what else do you need to know?

The new Kia Sportage has arrived, bringing an eye-catching new exterior design as well as a range of enhancements to this popular SUV. As before, Kia’s value-focused approach to cars means that the new Sportage is packed with standard equipment which is combined with an overhauled interior to create a far more premium experience than you’d get with its predecessor.

Plus, Kia has added some new hybrid setups to this new Sportage, bringing lower running costs as well as improved emissions. So what else do you need to know about it? Let’s take a look below.

What powertrains are available?

As highlighted earlier, the new Sportage has a range of efficient engines. In fact, there's a very broad line-up, meaning that there’s likely to be an engine setup out there for most buyers. The range kicks off with conventional 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, which occupy the more affordable end of the spectrum.

Then, there are mild-hybrid versions of both engines, which use a 48-volt starter-generator system for improved fuel economy and better emissions. Even the petrol does very well in terms of fuel economy, achieving up to 48.7mpg combined. The electric motor can even chime in at very slow speeds to provide some limited electric-only motoring.

Then, there are the tip-top plug-in hybrid models. These combine a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and battery. With this combination, you’re getting four-wheel-drive, but also the ability to travel for up to 30 miles of electric-only power.

What trim levels are offered?

2 - from £26,745

Things get off to a start with ‘2’ grade cars. Despite being the entry-level model, you’re still getting plenty of equipment including 17-inch alloy wheels, parking sensors and LED headlights that look particularly good at night.

Inside, there’s an eight-inch infotainment display and a 4.2-inch colour cluster display ahead of the driver. Plus, a leather-trimmed steering wheel is also included.

GT-Line - from £29,745

Step up to GT-Line and you’ll find that list of standard equipment expanded a fair amount. You now get larger 19-inch alloy wheels and rear privacy windows, while inside there are quilted leather suede seats and lumbar control for the driver.

The main infotainment system grows to a 12.3-inch version, but that handy 4.2-inch display ahead of the driver remains too.

3 - from £30,945

The ‘3’ grade takes a slightly more comfort-oriented approach, with cloth and leather seats now included alongside a heated steering wheel. This latter feature is particularly useful on cold mornings while you’re waiting for the car to warm up.

Elsewhere, we’ve got ‘smart’ cruise control and keyless entry and start.

4 - from £36,445

Move up to ‘4’ grade and you’ll find a lot of high-tech features have now been added. These include a wireless charger for your smartphone and a premium Harman Kardon sound system, as well as ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof.

You also get dual LED adaptive headlights and a surround-view monitor that helps to make even the tightest of parking spaces a breeze to access.

GT-Line S - from £38,445

Finally, we have GT-Line S. This brings pretty much all of the equipment you could possibly want, including 19-inch alloy wheels and a two-tone roof, alongside blind-spot collision avoidance technology for added peace of mind.

Plus, there’s a powered tailgate for easier access to the boot as well as ventilated front seats and full suede upholstery.

What about personalisation?

Because the Sportage is quite well specified as standard, there’s not much need to trouble the options list when building your new car. There isn’t a huge number of exterior colours to choose from - just six in total - but these can combine with a two-tone roof for a more striking appearance.

You’ve also got a variety of alloy wheels to choose from, with higher-spec models coming with larger and more intricate designs.
