Buyer’s guide to the 2020 Ford Focus

The Focus might be a household name, but what is the most recent version like?

The Ford Focus is a car which is well-known throughout the UK. As a household name, it’s a frequent sight in the best-selling car lists each month, while many see it as a reliable, well-priced and comfortable way of getting from A to B.

The most recent version brought more technical innovations as well as more standard equipment. If you’re considering a new Focus, then take a look at our guide below.

What powertrains are available?

When it comes to engines on the latest Focus, you’re spoilt for choice. Though a 1.5-litre petrol unit used to be available, this is being phased out in favour of a new mild-hybrid version of the existing 1.0-litre unit. Available in two different power outputs - 153bhp and 123bhp - it’ll bring economy figures of 51.4mpg for both units. The existing 1.0-litre engine remains available and is capable of returning up to 50.4mpg.

A 1.5-litre diesel is also available, and while it might not be the most powerful in the range it’s capable of returning excellent economy figures, with Ford claiming an impressive 80.7mpg combined. This is joined by a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel unit, which again brings excellent economy with up to 62.7mpg.

What trim levels are available?

As you’d expect, there’s quite a variety of specifications to choose from with the Focus, allowing it to cater to a variety of different needs and budgets. Let’s take a look through the trim levels available with the Focus.

Zetec Edition - from £22,210

Zetec Edition marks the entry point to the Focus range, but don’t go thinking that’s some bargain-basement specification as it’s actually brimmed with standard features. ‘Sparkle Silver’ 16-inch alloy wheels are included, for instance, as well as LED reflector headlamps with LED daytime running lights and front fog lamps with cornering function.

You also get body coloured bumpers, manual air conditioning and Ford’s latest SYNC 3 infotainment system accessed via an eight-inch touchscreen.

Titanium Edition - from £23,610

Titanium Edition builds on the Zetec trim level, adding LED rear lights and classy chrome surrounds for the front grille. You also get dual-zone air conditioning, heated front seats and classy ambient lighting.

Particularly useful in the UK are the rain sensing wipers and auto dimming rear-view mirror, which will help to take the backache out of dreary winter drives.

Titanium X Edition - from £25,190

Make the jump to Titanium X Edition and you’ll find larger 17-inch alloy wheels added to the Focus as well as LED headlights and rear privacy glass.

Inside, the drivers’ seat is now adjustable while a 12.3-inch digital cluster has been fitted in the place where the traditional dials would be located.

ST-Line Edition -  from £24,260

ST-Line Edition cars benefit from a sportier aesthetic, which is why you’ll find 17-inch alloy wheels added alongside a unique ST bodystyling package and a large body-coloured rear spoiler.

It features tuned sports suspension too, as well as polished twin tailpipes and a range of sporty interior enhancements.

ST-Line X Edition - from £26,460

Up next is ST-Line X Edition, which adds 18-inch alloy wheels to the package as well as go-faster red brake calipers. Inside, you’ll find partial leather upholstery, a six-way power-adjustable drivers’ seat and a heated steering wheel.

Active Edition - from £24,060

Active-specification Focus cars are aimed at those who are, well, active. It’s why you’ll find a ride height which has been bumped up by 30mm over the regular Focus, as well as chunky skid plates and side rocker mouldings.

You also get black roof rails on both hatch and estate versions, as well as a black painted roof and Active branded scuff plates.

Active X Edition - from £26,510

Active X Edition brings even more standard equipment, with a notable inclusion being a full openable panoramic roof. Painted black 18-inch alloy wheels are also included, as are full LED headlights and partial leather upholstery with contrasting blue piping and stitching.

Active X Vignale Edition - from £28,360

Active X Vignale Edition combines both luxurious and utilitarian features, which is why you’ll find the chunky looks of the Active meshed with high-end touches such as Windsor leather upholstery, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and a Bang & Olufsen premium audio system.

The LED headlights are now adaptive, while a rear wide-view reversing camera should help when positioning into the tightest of spaces.

Vignale Edition - from £28,010

Vignale sits atop the Focus specification range, which is why it benefits from a whole host of features. A unique front grille is fitted as well as 18-inch alloy wheels, and there are clever door edge protectors which help to avoid any potential dings.

You get active park assist too, as well as LED ambient lighting and a load-through ski hatch.

What about personalisation?

With such a variety of specifications on offer there’s a good amount of personalisation to be had from the outset, but if you’re looking for more ways to make a Focus just right for you then there are options.

There are plenty of paint colours to choose from, while a variety of different packs can be added to bring further levels of equipment to your particular Focus.
