BMW offers one of the widest line-ups of models of any brand. Name a car segment and there’s a good chance it will offer a vehicle in that class.
Ranging from more affordable hatchbacks to two-seat roadsters to electric SUVs, the line-up is impressively broad and quite extensive. It can make choosing the right BMW for you quite difficult, though, so here’s our quick guide to every BMW model on sale to date. Please note, we won’t include the brand’s M models, as they’re covered separately here.
1 Series – from £27,245
As the most affordable way of getting behind the wheel of a new BMW, the 1 Series is unsurprisingly one of the brand’s most popular models. A similar size to a Ford Focus, it offers plenty of space for the average family, while is better to drive than most in this class and also still gets a very upmarket entry.
2 Series Coupe – from £36,010
The second-generation 2 Series has only recently arrived on sale, bringing a bolder design, far more tech and greater interior space than its predecessor. Ideal for those not needing loads of practicality, the 2 Series remains rear-wheel-drive and is fantastic to drive. More sensible petrol and diesel engines are offered alongside a hot 369bhp M240i version.
2 Series Gran Coupe – from £28,705
The first of BMW’s ‘Gran Coupe’ models, which offer greater practicality than a regular ‘coupe’, this 2 Series doesn’t cost too much more than the 1 Series (on which it’s based), but offers bolder styling and a sleeker and more premium feeling look, while remaining a spacious choice.
2 Series Active Tourer – from £31,285
Speaking of space, BMW’s new 2 Series Active Tourer will appeal, as it offers lots of room for adults and a good-sized boot, and at a decent price too. Though MPVs might not be especially trendy, this Active Tourer really stands out with its tech-laden interior and remarkably enjoyable driving experience.
3 Series – from £37,805
Another of BMW’s core products, the 3 Series remains a hugely popular choice, especially with its plug-in hybrid setup. An ideal executive option with its stunning interior and great on-road dynamics, BMW has recently refreshed the 3, with the model now getting sharper styling and BMW’s latest high-end ‘Curved Display’ interior layout.
3 Series Touring – from £39,810
Though SUVs might have taken a slice of the estate car segment, there's still a lot to be said for these models, especially the 3 Series Touring. Impressing with its practicality and 500-litre boot, like the 3 Series Saloon, this is still great to drive and is fantastic to drive too.
i3 – from £33,805
The most affordable BMW EV, if you want an i3 you’ll have to act quickly as production has recently ended. Even though it’s discontinued it remains a great electric car, with its futuristic styling and sustainable interior meaning it doesn’t seem its age at all. Perfect for the city, this relatively compact electric hatchback offers a range of up to 190 miles.
4 Series Coupe – from £41,800
Based on the 3 Series, the 4 Series Coupe offers far more in the way of style, though its front-end styling has somewhat divided opinion. Nevertheless, the 4 Series is a fabulous mid-range coupe, delivering a brilliant driving experience and particularly upmarket interior.
4 Series Convertible – from £47,155
If you want that top-down experience, take a look at the 4 Series Convertible. Now using a sleeker canvas roof (rather than a metal hard-top like its predecessor), the roof can fold electrically in just 18 seconds. Also available with xDrive all-wheel-drive, it could be an ideal drop-top that you can use all 12 months of the year.
4 Series Gran Coupe – from £42,960
If you like the sleeker looks of the 4 Series, but find the other two derivatives a bit too compact, this Gran Coupe will be ideal. With a pair of rear doors and a more practical hatchback-like boot opening, it’s roomier than you might expect it to be. It’s particularly fun in top-spec 369bhp M440i form.
i4 – from £53,480
Going head-to-head with the Tesla Model 3, the i4 is an EV based on the excellent 4 Series Gran Coupe. With an even more pleasant interior (it gets the Curved Display that the Gran Coupe doesn’t), it boasts a range of up to 365 miles. A sporty M50 version is also available to those wanting more pace.
5 Series – from £41,480
BMW’s mid-size 5 Series has proven a solid choice over the years for those wanting an upmarket executive car. Particularly in saloon form, it’s been a hit with company car drivers, with its plug-in hybrid proving a great choice. Refined, comfortable and good to drive, the latest version is packed with technology.
5 Series Touring – from £44,085
Want more space from your 5 Series? Well, there’s a lot to like about this Touring estate model, which offers acres of room and a huge 560-litre boot. Like the Saloon, it’s got a fantastic, upmarket interior and is ideal for those that do lots of miles.
7 Series – from £N/A
The 7 Series acts as BMW’s luxurious flagship, and the brand is in the middle of launching a next-generation version, which is due later in the year. Set to be offered exclusively as a plug-in hybrid in the UK, it offers a striking new design language and is brimmed with technology. If you want the utmost in luxury from your BMW, whether you’re in the driving seat or being chauffeured around, the 7 Series is the car to go for.
i7 – from £108,305
The other major change with this 7 Series is that it’s also being offered in the EV, in the form of the i7. Rivalling the Mercedes EQS, BMW’s forthcoming flagship EV will launch before the regular 7 Series and packs an impressive electric range of up to 388 miles.
8 Series Coupe – from £79,000
BMW revived the 8 Series nameplate in 2018 for its flagship coupe. Arguably BMW’s best looking car, this is a model that’s all about style and elegance. Jump inside and the interior continues to impress, while the 8 Series’ combination of comfort, performance and driving pleasure is hard to beat.
8 Series Convertible – from £84,050
But the 8 Series package gets even better if you lift the lid off it, gaining even more in the way of glamour. If you regularly tour across Europe (to the South of France, for example), it’s easy to see the appeal of the 8 Series Convertible. Like the rest of the line-up, a recent update has given the model more technology, a sportier design and plusher interior.
8 Series Gran Coupe – from £76,975
If you love the elegant looks of the 8 Series but find the Coupe and Convertible’s two-door layout just a bit impractical, the Grand Coupe could be the way to go. Gaining additional doors and more rear space, it makes it far more appealing to those needing space for rear passengers. The other bonus is that it’s also the best-value 8 Series in the line-up.
X1 – from £36,225
BMW’s SUV line-up is one of the most extensive around, and kicking off the range is the X1. Recently entering a new generation, it’s got a bolder look, all of BMW’s latest in-car technology and more space too. It’s one of those cars that really questions if you need to upgrade to a larger model.
iX1 – from £N/A
The other key change on the latest X1 is the addition of the electric iX1. Set to bring no compromise when it comes to interior space, this EV will arrive a few months after the regular car, and bring a powertrain developing 309bhp, along with a claimed electric range of up to 272 miles.
X2 – from £33,540
Currently BMW’s most affordable SUV, the X2 is essentially a more coupe-styled version of the X1, which sacrifices some spaciousness in the name of style. Also available as a plug-in hybrid, the X2 is still an attractive choice for families.
X3 – from £45,485
The X3 is a very popular car for BMW, with this mid-sized SUV being a particularly popular family car. Available with a wide range of trim levels and petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrain options, it’s also very practical. Recent updates have sharpened the X3’s design and given the interior a more modern feel.
iX3 – from £62,865
The X3 is also another model used as the base for an EV, with the iX3 being a particularly popular model in BMW’s electric line-up. Though not particularly flash or gimmicky, it’s one of those cars that is just impressively easy to live with (particularly for those new to electric cars). A 285-mile electric range is respectable too.
iX – from £69,905
But if you want your EV to be a bit flashier, you should take a look at the iX. The first in a new wave of electric cars from BMW, this SUV ushered in the fancy new interior design we’ve already mentioned, along with bold (if divisive) styling. The big battery versions are even capable of travelling a claimed 380 miles to a charge.
X4 – from £51,100
Coupe-SUVs are something you’ll either love or hate, and if you’re in that first category, you’ll like the X4. With particularly prominent styling, this model also gets a very upmarket interior, while there are some fantastic engines on offer – particularly the six-cylinder M40i and M40d versions.
X5 – from £64,040
The X5 was BMW’s first SUV and it remains an accomplished choice all these years later. Available with the option of seven seats, it’s a hugely practical large SUV that offers supreme levels of comfort and refinement. The plug-in hybrid version is particularly impressive, too, as it offers a range of up to 54 miles – one of the longest of any PHEV.
X6 – from £65,740
Perhaps BMW’s most marmite car, if you want to stand out on the road, the X6 is the way to go. The largest of the brand’s coupe-SUVs, the X6 offers a huge amount of interior space despite its rakish roofline. There are some fantastic engines available too.
X7 – from £83,295
The largest of all of BMW’s models, the X7 is a Range Rover-sized SUV that offers similar levels of luxury to the 7 Series in a higher-riding package. Available with up to seven full-size seats, the X7 is one of the best premium SUVs on the market. Recent updates have given it an even bolder look, alongside the Curved Display interior and new mild-hybrid six- and eight-cylinder engines.
Z4 – from £40,745
A rather different option to the rest of the BMW line-up, the Z4 is sometimes forgotten about, but if you want a fun – yet upmarket – two-seat roadster, it’s most certainly worth a look. Available with a choice of four and six-cylinder engines, the Z4 is an ideal summer convertible that you can enjoy every mile.
