The SUV continues to be an incredibly popular segment in the British car market, and there are currently some excellent options to choose from.
It seems every brand now offers a built-up option with off-road styling and a raised ride height for a more commanding view and position on the road.

BMW X2
Named our favourite SUV of 2018 earlier this year, the BMW X2 comes with all the attributes many modern drivers are after. The compact model comes with SUV style alongside plenty of space and the reliable BMW build quality across the German brand’s models – all in a compact layout. Available with plenty of great tech, you will easily find an X2 to suit you in the premium crossover area of the market.
Ford Edge
With the updated version of the Edge on its way, the Ford SUV offers one of the best mid-size packages available in the segment. It has the familiarity of the Fiesta and Focus models with the easily navigable cockpit and plenty of load room in the back for carrying items and people in comfort. It also looks the part, with the upcoming refresh available in a sharp ST-Line guise.
Jaguar F-Pace
The brand’s first ever SUV was a success when it joined the market back in 2016 and in continues to be an excellent option in the segment. The stylish F-Pace brings Jaguar’s dynamic driving setup along with a premium finish and a roomy interior that you would only previously be able to find on the brand’s XF Sportbrake. The SUV offered a different way for Jaguar customers to enjoy great driving along with a spacious vehicle.
Land Rover Discovery
The fourth generation Discovery carries a prestigious off-roading history as well as an advanced interior and great abilities. As with previous editions, the current Discovery is built to drive well both on tarmac and on rougher stuff, thanks to its excellent Terrain Response system, and it also can tow up to 3.5 tonnes. Add to that a supremely comfortable ride and you have a truly great SUV.
Peugeot 3008
Affordable pricing, plenty of space and an innovative cockpit layout help the 3008 stand out from the crowd. The iCockpit layout in the front gives the 3008 a more dynamic driving feel when you’re behind the wheel and the impressive 591-litre boot space is excellent for a mid-size model. Add to that the bold exterior design and you have a great option to think about.
Renault Koleos
Renault’s Koleos offers similar amount of space in the rear loading area to the Peugeot 3008 but comes with additional smart solutions – such as the one-touch flat-folding rear seats – to make it a great daily family car. Available with a large variety of safety and driving assists, the Koleos also comes with a good level of equipment and excellent style options that make it look very smart.
Skoda Kodiaq
With space for up to seven people, the Kodiaq was unveiled back in 2016, and was quick to garner a lot of praise. Vauxhall Grandland X
Even though it is the cheapest one on the list, the Vauxhall Grandland X has plenty to offer for those on a budget. In the right colour, the mid-size model looks very smart indeed and with a decent amount of space in the back, carrying people and items won’t be tricky at all. All of the tech on-board is easy to use too, and with plenty of options available, the Grandland X can be kitted out to a high level for a lower cost than many of its rivals.
Volkswagen Tiguan
The mid-size German SUV can be crammed full of great tech to help make your life on the road much easier. The Tiguan also comes with an exterior design that is easy on the eye and an interior layout that is both adaptable and spacious. Volvo XC40
The Swedish brand’s latest addition to its SUV line-up and one that has impressed from the get-go. The effective design is drawn from the XC90 and XC60, but in the more compact layout, it looks very handsome and houses a cleverly packaged cabin. Fitted with the brand’s simple infotainment system and a high level of safety equipment, the XC40 is one of the best options in the crowded compact SUV segment.
