Best family hatchbacks with big boots

It’s great when you find a car that fits the family, but what about all the extra baggage? Here are the five best family cars with big boot space.

Family hatchbacks continue to be some of the most popular models on sale in the UK, even with the increasing popularity of the family-focused crossover.

The hatchback segment is full of vehicles with different shapes and sizes, so there isn’t a set template to get the most boot space.

We take a look at the best family hatchbacks with large boots, and even though these aren’t the top five largest models on offer, these cars are impressive to drive as well.

Skoda Octavia

Skoda’s all-round hatchback, the Octavia, has the largest boot of any hatch on the British market – 590 litres – which puts it streets ahead of anything else on this list. Even with that cavernous boot, you still have plenty of space for taller passengers in the rear and with Skoda’s quality finish, you’ll find this as a perfect family car – whatever spec you choose. It may not be the most dynamic to drive, but it’s comfortable, spacious and cheap to buy compared to a lot of its rivals. No other car on this list can get close on the size front.

The spaceship-like Civic may not be expected to have a capacious boot, but the latest version of the Japanese hatchback has a surprisingly large load space of 478 litres – making it really practical. The boot doesn’t encroach on leg space either, although tall rear passengers will want more headroom due to the sloping and sporty roofline. It’s also very nice to drive and there are engine options that help make it cheap to own.

Peugeot 308

In recent times, Peugeot has slowly brought back a reputation of quality and well-built models, and the 308 is one such model. Although the boot space may affect rear legroom slightly, the 470-litre hold is very handy indeed – falling just short of the Civic. Much larger than the other two on the list, the 308 has a well-organised interior and is comfortable to be in on the go, so is well-worth checking out.

Renault Mégane

The stylish Mégane is sleek, well-built and comes with plenty of kit, and although the boot may not be as large as other options on this list, it’s still more than spacious enough to get all your things in. The 384-litre space is hampered slightly by allowing for a lot of rear passenger space, but the Mégane drives well and makes up for the lack of space compared to other models here by being the smartest of the lot.

Volkswagen Golf

As the best driving model on the list, we can allow the ever-popular Golf coming with a smaller boot than the rest – just 380 litres in fact. But Volkswagen makes up for the small boot elsewhere, by offering a car that is refined, superbly built and can be fitted with a range of quality powertrains, including the all-electric e-Golf. Passenger space is also superb, making it easy to see why the Golf is currently the second-most popular car in the UK.
