Knowing where to look when it comes to picking your next company car can be a challenge.
The choice of body style can be complex, as can be the manufacturer, and another thing to deliberate over is powertrain, with petrol, diesel, hybrid and EVs all available.
Here we’ve selected the five best options, with a budget capped at £35,000…
Hyundai IONIQ Electric
Hyundai has been expanding its electrified range for some years, and the IONIQ is a great showcase for the firm – being offered as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and an all-electric variant.
It’s proven to be a popular model for fleet users, and the 2019 update is even more appealing thanks to a revised look, enhanced interior and also a much-improved range on the Electric version – now up to 184 miles from a 38.3kWh battery. It’s a superb company car, too, particularly from April 2020 when the Benefit-in-Kind tax is cut to zero – giving it even more appeal.
Volkswagen Golf
The Volkswagen Golf is an enormously popular model with company car drivers, with more than half of all registrations of this model going to fleet users.
While the eighth-generation Golf arrived in Spring, the outgoing version is still a hugely appealing option – particularly as it’s available with petrol, diesel and electrified powertrains. The latter version is the e-Golf, which manages a 144-mile electric range (meaning zero company car tax from April) though a diesel is still an appealing option for long-distance drivers, with a BIK of 30 per cent.
Mini Countryman PHEV
It’s usually the compact Mini hatch that’s the appealing option for company car drivers, but if you can spare a bit of extra cash for something bigger, the large Mini Countryman is a great option.
In the meantime, before the new Mini Electric arrives in showrooms, it’s also the only electrified Mini in the range, with the British brand offering an efficient plug-in hybrid version of this crossover – offering low emissions and a claimed electric range of 26 miles. It also sits in a low company car tax bracket, with a BIK rating of just 14 per cent.
Alfa Romeo Giulia
It might be the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class that dominate in this sector when it comes to company cars, but buyers could be missing out on a trick by not taking a look at the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
This stylish and different executive model is a glamorous and impressively agile model that is ideal if you want to stand out from the crowd. If you choose the 158bhp 2.2-litre diesel, it slots underneath the £35,000 barrier, and also comes with a Benefit-in-Kind of 34 per cent.
MG ZS EV
Another worthy electric car that’s worth considering is the new MG ZS EV – a model that offers impressive value for money, with a starting price of just £22,245 once all the grants have been deducted from the price.
It also comes loaded with kit, while its 163-mile electric range should prove to be plenty for the majority of drivers. And because it’s also all-electric, it will qualify for zero per cent company car tax from April 2020.
