10 great new cars to get on the new 22-plate

From EVs to sports coupes, there’s plenty of exciting new cars on the market

The start of March signals one main thing in the automotive world – the arrival of the new registration plate.

And March 1 sees the introduction of the new 22-plate, though with continued shortages of new cars due to ongoing parts supply issues, there won’t be quite so many brand-new models rolling around as usual.

That said, there are still plenty of fantastic new cars to get on the 22-plate. Here are 10 great choices, ranging from affordable superminis to flagship electric saloons.

BMW 2 Series

This year is an important one for BMW, and alongside a range of new EVs sees the return of the 2 Series Coupe. It’s the firm’s most affordable sports model, and retains its fun rear-wheel-drive layout.

There’s a new 369bhp M240i model at the top of the range too, which can manage 0-60mph in as little as 4.1 seconds, while this brand-new model gets a more muscular design and in-car technology as well.

DS 4

Though once a part of Citroen, DS went its separate ways as a standalone brand a few years ago, and is just now finding its feet at the premium end of the market. We reckon the new DS 4 is the French firm’s best car yet too, and proves a credible alternative to the Volkswagen Golf.

Bringing a glamorous design, loads of technology and a particularly premium feel, it looks set to help DS grow its sales further. Like the brand’s full range, the DS 4 is also offered with electrified powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid.

Ford Focus

The family hatchback class looks to be on top form in 2022, and has only improved further with the introduction of a facelifted version of the Ford Focus – one of the brand’s best-selling models.

Key changes include a smarter and modernised front end, while inside the Focus gets a large new wide 13.2-inch touchscreen running on Ford’s latest operating system. It really helps to build the car’s cabin and is also the widest screen currently offered in this class.

Kia Sportage

Kia’s Sportage is now one of the UK’s best-selling models, and the South Korean car firm is hoping that only improves with the arrival of the new fifth-generation version of this family SUV.

Now boasting a far more stylish design, the Sportage remains generously equipped as standard and also gets a far more upmarket interior to make it more competitive in this crowded class. Another change is the addition of a range of electrified powertrains, including both hybrid and plug-in hybrids.
