We say A Golf but with the added thrill of a drop-top roof but it's not as good to drive and a little cramped in the back.Performance The fastest engine in the range for the Golf drop-top is the 1.4-litre 160PS TSI unit that clears 62mph in 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 134mph. The 2.0-litre TDI diesel is slower but with 236lb-ft of torque and fuel economy improvements, it’s the better choice all round.Emissions Volkswagen has applied its BlueMotion eco-signature to its Golf Cabriolet which means low emissions and impressive fuel economy returns are available. The 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre TDI both receive the BlueMotion treatment and both return more than 60mpg on a combined cycle and emit less than 120g/km in CO2 emissions.Driving Unlike the standard Golf, the Cabriolet version is boring to drive. Where the Golf and particularly its GTI and R versions are great fun to drive, the Cabriolet is much more comfortable than exciting. If you’re looking for a comfortable and refined cruiser though, the Cabriolet is a good bet.Feel The ride can at times feel firm but generally there should be no issues in terms of ride comfort and particularly refinement. The cabin is well insulated and road, wind and engine noise are hardly noticeable.Space At the front there’s plenty of room for both occupants. At the back there’s a 250-litre boot that remains the same volume whether the roof is up or down. The rear seats fold down flat as well so more space is available when required.Equipment Like all Golf’s, the Cabriolet is well kitted out with standard models fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels, a DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity. Further up the range and more sophisticated and clever technologies become available and there are plenty of option packs, too.Price The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet doesn’t come cheap and prices start from around £20,000 and rise to a nudge under £28,500.Quality The Golf Cabriolet is a Volkswagen so you know it is going to be finished to a high-quality, robust and reliable. Unfortunately that takes precedence over an interior of any particular interest and in truth it’s all pretty dull inside.Safety The Golf Cabriolet comes with hidden roll bars that deploy when a collision is imminent, reactive airbags and stability control as standard.Pros The Golf Cabriolet is a solid and dependable drop-top that’s well kitted out and incredibly reliable.Cons The Golf Cabriolet is all a bit too sensible.
