When it comes to superminis, it’s often difficult to look past the country’s bestselling car, the Ford Fiesta. But Peugeot’s latest small car addition, the 208, is an interesting little number that will definitely tempt buyers looking for something that is both fresh and capable of rivalling the ubiquitous Fiesta. Still, there’s other competition to consider too, from budget cars like the Dacia Sandero to the customisable Vauxhall ADAM. With a long history of great small cars, can the French carmaker deliver once again with the 208? Performance 4.0/5 There are plenty of engines to choose from on the 208, including a new range of PureTech three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engines. We tested the 1.6-litre e-HDi diesel model and although some diesels can be a little dull in terms of power, this model is surprisingly nippy, with 115bhp on tap and a fair amount of torque. If you were none the wiser, you would think you were driving a petrol. Ride and handling 3.5/5 The 208’s steering is on the light side, which means inner-city driving is made much easier. However, when it comes to throwing it around corners, it can be a bit nerve-wracking as you struggle to feel what the front wheels are doing. Body roll is minimal however. If you’re really interested in fun driving dynamics, go for the 208 GTi. Another thing to keep in mind is the size of the steering wheel. Although it may sound trivial, the now smaller and sportier steering wheel can throw a few drivers off – so make sure it really is for you before committing. Equipment 4.0/5 The flagship Feline model which we had come in at £18,485 and offers an extensive list of kit that will keep both style and technologically conscious individuals at ease. Added equipment of the Feline trim includes everything from DAB radio to satnav and a panoramic glass roof to blue ambient lighting and black leather upholstery. There’s no CD player available on the 208 range, which is replaced by Bluetooth and USB connectivity - so make sure you stock up on playlists in iTunes and Spotify. Practicality 4.0/5 If you have seen any Peugeot adverts recently, you’ll know about its de-cluttering intentions, tidying the dashboard design; the 208 is a great example of executing this with aplomb, helping the interior Feng Shui. In the five-door’s rear, you will be pleasantly surprised with the amount of head and legroom. When it comes to boot space, the 208 is smaller than the Fiesta with its seats in place, but trumps its Ford competitor – which offers 974 litres with the seats folded down, with a total of 1,152-litres on offer. Running costs 4.0/5 The 208’s 1.6-litre e-HDi diesel engine is extremely frugal, emitting just 99g/km. It also returns a rather impressive average of 70mpg. Verdict 4.0/5 Efficient, practical and stylish, the 208 is everything a supermini should be. It’s going to take something pretty special to tackle the Ford Fiesta’s driving dynamics. This may ultimately be the fork in the road between the two models as they both carry the same entry level price tag of £9,995. But, if unique style is what you want, then the Peugeot 208 is a breath of fresh air.
