We say You get what you pay for with the Cruze, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.Performance The Chevy Cruze’s petrol engines are rather weak, though the 148bhp diesel – one of several 2.0-litre diesels in different power guises – is much stronger and pretty flexible.Emissions CO2 levels are not the best, most Cruze engines emit around 150g/km, while fuel consumption noses above 50mpg with the diesels.Driving Low prices for the Cruze are reflected in the drive, which is competent but fairly uninvolving.Feel No problems regarding external road or wind noise in the Cruze, though petrol engines are loud while diesels are much smoother and quieter.Space Space isn’t an issue in the Cruze: ample leg- head-room in the rear, decent size boot and split-folding rear seats.Equipment Entry level S models boast air conditioning and a CD player. Range-topping LTZ models add climate control, cruise control and electric rear windows.Price Very cheap to buy, particularly at entry-level models, which is where the smart money on the Cruze will go. Running costs will be middling while residual values won’t be the best.Quality The Cruze looks good on the outside considering the price, though the cabin is a showcase of cheap plastic. The centre console is appealing however, taking cues from the Insignia. Build quality should be strong.Safety Stability control, six airbags and deadlocks come as standard on all Cruze models.Pros Big, cheap, great standard kit, different styling.Cons Weak petrol engines, generally dull handling, may pale next to better alternatives.Alternatives Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Kia cee’d, Hyundai i30, Citroen C4
