Stripped-back Toyota GRMN Yaris hot hatch revealed

More extreme model was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022

Toyota has unveiled a more extreme version of its highly-acclaimed GR Yaris – the GRMN.

Created by the firm’s Gazoo Racing division, the model will be limited to just 500 units and brings a range of upgrades over the regular GR Yaris. Taking inspiration from the brand’s many motorsport efforts from the hot hatch, the GRMN feels a more rigid body, is 20kg lighter and has also been given a wider track.

Revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon – a huge exhibition for modified cars – it’s also been lowered to drop the center of gravity further, while its gearbox and mechanical differential have also been fine tuned.

The rear seats have also been removed and replaced with a chunky cross-brace, while an optional ‘Circuit Package’ brings bespoke 18-inch BBS alloys, Bilstein shock absorbers, a carbon fibre rear spoiler and a body kit. Standard cars still feature various exposed carbon fibre elements, including the bonnet.

Toyota says all these changes result in a car that can be ‘driven faster and with more peace of mind, with improved braking force, grip, cornering and following performance based on feedback from professional drivers’.

Sadly all 500 models look to be destined for Japan, with Toyota saying that cars will be allocated through a ‘reservation lottery’ through the brand’s website. All cars will then be sold through Japanese ‘GR Garages’, with first deliveries expected in the summer.
