Shell replaces petrol pumps with electric car chargers at new London EV hub

It’s the fuel giant’s first EV charging hub in the world

Shell has opened its first EV charging hub in Fulham, London as the brand aims to build up its network of electric car chargers.

The site was previously a traditional petrol station forecourt, but Shell has ripped out the old fuel pumps and replaced them with nine ultra-rapid electric car chargers. Capable of charging at up to 175kW, they will help to make sure drivers spend considerably less time plugged in, compared to the more widely used 50kW rapid chargers.

While drivers are charging, they can also take advantage of the on-site Waitrose and Costa Coffee, along with comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi. When rebuilding the Fulham site, Shell used a range of sustainable materials, including a timber canopy with built-in solar panels. The chargers also run on 100 per cent renewable electricity, the firm has said.

István Kapitány, Shell’s global executive vice president for mobility said: “EV drivers are looking for a charging experience that is as fast, convenient and comfortable as possible. This is exactly what Shell Fulham aims to offer.

“It joins our growing network of Shell Recharge sites at forecourts and other locations, our ubitricity on-street charging network, and our Shell Recharge Solutions for homes and businesses as we increasingly help EV drivers to charge wherever they need it. It also gives us all a glimpse into the future of mobility.”

Shell has previously announced its intention to build 800 electric car charging points at 100 Waitrose stores across the UK by 2025, while through its ownership of Ubitricity, it aims to install 50,000 on-street chargers in the UK by the same date.
