Mercedes-AMG ONE Breaks Nürburgring Lap Record Again

Mercedes-AMG ONE sets a new production vehicle lap record at Nürburgring, beating its previous time by over five seconds. With a time of 6:29.090 minutes, brand ambassador and DTM driver Maro Engel has once again demonstrated the incredible capabilities of the AMG ONE hypercar. This record-breaking performance solidifies the AMG ONE as the fastest production car to lap the 20.832-kilometre Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

F1™-Derived Hybrid Technology: A Game Changer for the Road

At the heart of the Mercedes-AMG ONE is a technological marvel inspired by Formula 1™, blending hybrid efficiency with incredible power. The vehicle’s powertrain consists of a 1.6-litre V6 engine paired with four electric motors, delivering a total of 782 kW (1,063 hp). This hybrid setup combines the raw performance of internal combustion with cutting-edge electrification, making it the first road car to feature an F1™ hybrid system directly adapted for public use.

The Electric Turbocharger Advantage

One of the standout features of the AMG ONE is its electric exhaust-gas turbocharger, a system borrowed directly from Mercedes’ F1™ engines. This turbocharger improves responsiveness by driving the compressor electrically before exhaust gases take over, virtually eliminating turbo lag. The technology ensures lightning-quick throttle response even at low engine speeds, enhancing both performance and drivability.

In addition, this electric turbocharger acts as a generator, harvesting excess energy from the exhaust gases to recharge the battery or power the front axle. This process, combined with direct injection, optimises fuel efficiency and thermodynamic performance, reducing emissions while maintaining exceptional power output.

Hybrid Powertrain and Energy Recovery

The AMG ONE’s hybrid powertrain features one motor integrated into the turbocharger, another motor directly on the combustion engine, and two more motors driving the front wheels. The high-performance system is managed by an Energy Flow Control (EFC) system, which intelligently distributes power between the internal combustion engine and the electric motors. This complex configuration not only boosts total system output but also allows for torque vectoring, enabling precise control and superior handling, especially on tight corners and during high-speed sections of the track.

Pushing the Limits of Performance at Nürburgring

On September 23, 2024, under ideal weather conditions, Maro Engel embarked on his record-breaking run at Nürburgring. Temperatures were a mild 15°C (air) and 20°C (asphalt), offering perfect grip on the dry track. After two warm-up laps, Engel made his third timed lap count, expertly using the AMG ONE's energy recovery and hybrid systems to squeeze out every bit of performance from the hypercar.

The latest achievement at Nürburgring underscores Mercedes-AMG's relentless pursuit of pushing technological boundaries in automotive performance. The AMG ONE, with its Formula 1™-inspired hybrid powertrain, active aerodynamics, and meticulous engineering, has once again demonstrated its dominance in the hypercar world. As the fastest production vehicle to ever lap the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, it raises the bar for what is possible in road-legal performance cars.
