Jeep introduces mild e-Hybrid powertrain to Renegade and Compass crossovers

New powertrain promises greater responsiveness and reduced emissions

Jeep has revealed a new mild-hybrid powertrain for its Renegade and Compass SUVs.

Designed to sit alongside the 4xe plug-in hybrid of both cars, the e-Hybrid uses a new four-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine, producing 128bhp and 240Nm of torque. It’s also paired to a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Within the setup is a 48-volt electric motor that can separately produce 18bhp and 55Nm of torque. Unlike some other mild-hybrid systems, Jeep says that this is able to ‘propel the wheels even when the internal combustion engine is turned off’. The car is also said to start-up in electric, and also run as an EV at low speeds, cruising and when parking. The system is said to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 15 per cent, compared to previous petrol cars.

A belt starter generator is also added to the petrol engine, to make sure transitions between petrol and electric power are quick and silent, while regenerative braking helps to harness lost energy to improve efficiency further.

Jeep is also introducing a new special Upland launch edition for the new model, which aims to use a range of sustainable materials. Also available on 4xe versions, it brings an exclusive Matter Azur paint colour,  a two-tone black roof, and gloss black alloy wheels, which are 17 inches in size on the Renegade and 18 on the Compass. They also feature bronze detailing on the front grille rings and on the rear skid plate.

Inside, the Upland versions come with a headlining and floor mats made from recycled materials, along with ‘Seaqual’ seats, which are partly made of recycled plastic removed from the ocean.

Prices for the Jeep Renegade e-Hybrid start from £31,130, and £32,130 for the Compass e-Hybrid. Both cars are now available to order.
