Honda officially teases new Civic Type R hot hatch

Upcoming model is confirmed for 2022

Honda has given official confirmation that its new Civic Type R hot hatch will arrive in 2022.

It’s the first time the Japanese firm has fully acknowledged the development of the new performance model, though details remain very thin on the ground. In a small post, Honda revealed just two pictures of the camouflaged new model, along with the caption ‘Development of the best performing Honda Civic Type R continues’.

The new Type R is also said to be ready to hit the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany,  a circuit widely used by manufacturers to fine tune and test the performance credentials of their upcoming cars to the extremes.

Honda is yet to announce powertrain details, but the model is expected to resist electrification – something that’s happening to the rest of the brand’s line-up. It means an uprated version of the current outgoing Civic Type R’s engine is likely – with the existing model’s 2.0-litre turbo kicking out 316bhp.

Though still in camouflage, the bold styling of the Type R looks to remain, with the model getting aggressive bumpers and a large air intake. Around the rear, there’s a huge rear wing, while the Type R’s unique central triple exhaust remains as well.

Given even the standard Civic is yet to reach Europe, it’s likely the new model won’t reach Europe until the middle of next year. Further details and a full reveal are likely to happen in early 2022.
