Jeep has revealed its new fifth-generation Grand Cherokee, which is tipped to be one of its most advanced, capable and luxurious models ever made.
Though arriving in North America by the end of the year, the Grand Cherokee isn’t tipped to go on sale in the UK. 2021 marks three years since its predecessor was discontinued in the country.
Key to this new model is its new plug-in hybrid powertrain – the 4xe – which will offer a 25-mile electric range and combined petrol-electric range of more than 400 miles. The combined power figure is also 369bhp, while its 17kWh battery can be both heated and cooled for optimum performance and the best possible charging times. While Jeep will also offer a powerful V8 model, tighter European emissions regulations make it quite unlikely that the American brand will launch it here.
Jeep also promises that the new Grand Cherokee will be the most capable off-road yet, with features such as a sway bar disconnect all wing this Jeep to be taken further off the beaten track than its competitors. Its adaptive air suspension system offers nearly 30cm of ground clearance, and allows the car to wade up to 61cm, while offering a towing limit of up to 3,265kg. A more extreme ‘Trailhawk’ version is able to take its rugged capability even further with its all-terrain tyres and feature that helps to keep the car at a constant speed while off roading.
Inside, it uses the brand’s latest UConnect 5 media system, while the front-seat passenger screen also gets a second screen, accompanied by rear TV screens for those in the back seats. Other tech available include a digital rearview mirror, Amazon Alexa functionality and a widescreen head-up display. Jeep is also promising improved interior space, both for passengers and when it comes to boot volume.
The new Grand Cherokee has styling inspired by the larger Grand Wagoneer – Jeep’s flagship model that’s not sold in the UK – including with its wider and larger version of the brand’s seven-slot grille, widened track and extended bonnet. Various ‘active’ aero features also aim to improve performance fuel efficiency.
Further UK details about the Jeep Grand Cherokee are expected at the start of next year.
