Guide to Volkswagen's Family car range: What to buy

Volkswagen has a brilliant family car range on offer and if you're in the market, here are the models to consider from the German car brand.

As Volkswagen has one of the widest ranges in the industry, it’s no surprise that there are many cars suited for families in its line-up.

All of the options come in different shapes and sizes, and here we’ll give you a rundown of all their attributes.

Golf

Offered in three different body styles – hatchback, Estate and SV – the Golf line-up all provide families with space, comfort and practicality. Even though the standard model is the smallest of the three, it still provides more than enough room for being a family workhorse, while the MPV-style SV and Estate are better for carrying more items and offer improved passenger space. Although a new Golf is expected in 2019, the current model is still one of the best hatchbacks on offer and, with a starting price of £18,340, it is priced well.

Passat

The Passat has been a mainstay of the Volkswagen for some time, and the current saloon and estate options both provide families with high end practicality and equipment. The Passat Estate even comes with an Alltrack edition, which offers a higher ride height and chunkier styling so it can go off the beaten track better than most. In estate guise, you get 650 litres of boot space, which can be extended to 1,780 litres with the rear bench folded down – more than enough for most. Prices for Passat models start from £22,195.

Tiguan

As the mid-sized SUV in the line-up, the Tiguan is well-sized for most families and comes with some great style options to make it stand out from the rest. A seven-seat option called the Allspace is also on the way, meaning that it becomes one of the most practical Volkswagen options as well, thanks to its 700-litre boot in its five-seat layout. The standard Tiguan’s boot is only marginally smaller at 615 litres, but that’s more than enough for standard family needs. The range starts from £23,485.

Touran

Although the boot space isn’t the best in its standard layout – 137 litres –passenger space is where the Touran shines, and provides more than enough room for seven to sit in comfort. With the latest model fitted with some of Volkswagen’s most recent technology, the Touran packs plenty to please most, and with a huge load space when you’re not using the rear seats – 1,857 litres in fact – then it’s easy to see why it is such a good family option. Prices for the Touran start from £23,565.

Sharan

The Sharan is the Touran’s larger sibling and offers 300 litres of boot space, as well as seating for seven, which is pretty impressive. As the largest family car Volkswagen has to offer, the Sharan is built to be as practical as possible, and seven adults will be able to sit in comfort inside. When you don’t need any of the back seats up, you’ll find a cavernous 2,297-litre load space. Prices for the Sharan range start from £28,070.

Touareg

As the most recent addition to Volkswagen’s SUV line-up, the Touareg is also the most high-end option from the German manufacturer. With large, clear displays for the driver and copious amounts of room for the five people on-board, with the high-end materials used making it even more comfortable. The 679-litre load space is ample for most circumstances, while the 1,642 litres with the rear seats folded down is excellent for a car of this size. Prices for the Touareg start from £45,970.
