MG is a brand that is quickly turning to electrification, with the firm already having a pair of popular EVs available and targeting for half of its sales by the end of 2021 to be electrified.
But it’s not just EVs that will play a part but also plug-in hybrids as well, with MG recently introducing a new PHEV version of its largest SUV to broaden the line-up further. Offering low running costs and the same practicality as you get with the standard car, it’s certainly an appealing electrified option.
Here’s what you need to know about it before buying....
What powertrains are available?
Though the HS is usually only available with a single petrol engine, the PHEV expands the range of options available here.
It actually combines the same petrol engine as the regular car with a 90kW electric motor for a combined 254bhp and 370Nm of torque – comfortably making it MG’s most powerful car on sale today. The sprint to 60mph takes just 6.9 seconds, while being capable of a max speed of 118mph.
It also utilises a 16.6kWh battery, which when charged allows for a claimed 32 miles of electric-only driving. The battery can also be charged in three hours using a 7kW wallbox or seven hours with a standard three-pin plug.
In terms of running costs, MG claims it will return 155.8mpg, along with CO2 emissions of just 43g/km. A benefit-in-kind of 11 per cent also makes it an attractive choice as a company car.
What trim levels are offered?
MG offers a choice of two very well-equipped trims on the HS – Excite and Exclusive. Equipment highlights and pricing are as follows.
Excite – from £30,095
If you like getting plenty for your money, the HS PHEV is an ideal fit, with standard equipment including leather-style upholstery, keyless entry and start and a 10.1-inch touchscreen that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also comes with dual-zone climate control, an electric driver’s seat, heated front seats and a digital instrument cluster. It also features the ‘MG Pilot’ driver assistance pack, which includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and a 360-degree camera system.
Exclusive – from £32,595
Upgrading to the Exclusive brings a panoramic sunroof, bi-function LED headlights, leather upholstery and cool sports seats. You also get ambient interior lighting, an electric boot and an electric passenger’s seat.
What about personalisation?
Though the HS PHEV is a model that prides itself on personalisation, there are various ways of customising it.
For starters, you can choose from White Pearl, Black Pearl, Crimson Red or Sky Blue paint colours, while MG offers a range of accessories, including with roof bars, black door mirror caps and a rear bumper guard to protect against chips and scratches.
